Way of the Knight-Enchanter, Way of the Necromancer, and Way of the Rift Mage are triggered after speaking to the appropriate trainers if you're playing as a mage they arrive after you complete the Specialists for the Inquisitor mission from the war map. While you can run all three quests, you can only commit to one of the three disciplines, which is irreversible. You can resolve all three quests before making your ultimate choice.
All 'Way of X' quests require you to create a specific object to give to the trainer who assigned you the quest. Each trainer will give you the recipe automatically upon triggering the quest. All these objects, regardless of what kind it is, need to be crafted at a Requisitions table. There is one Requisitions table at each camp in the field, or you can use the one inside the building next to where Cassandra trains in Skyhold.
True Knights of Winter was first created as Knights of Winter on March 19, 2013, In February 2014, the name was changed to True Knights of Winter. We are loyal to House Stark. We are those who crossed the land-bridge from Essos that now we call the Stepstones. The Knights of Columbus has donated over 1,000 ultrasound machines to 750+ pregnancy centers. As the Supreme Knight has said, “What greater legacy can a council leave, than to save the life of a child?” Help contribute to the single greatest humanitarian achievement of the Knights of Columbus as we strive to save millions of lives.
If you follow the Way of the Knight-Enchanter (as followed by Vivienne), you essentially become a melee mage. You'll be able to wield a very powerful magical sword that cuts through barriers and armors, which will significantly help against dragons and red templars. It's best for direct damage, and turns your mage into an unstoppable melee attacker.
The Power of the Knight-Enchanter[edit]
The Knight-Enchanter specialization is nearly game-breaking, and when combined with the right spells in other trees, your character may be strong enough to single-handedly kill just about anything in the game, Dragons included. Vivienne can already do this if her skills and abilities are assigned correctly, so if both your character and Vivienne take this path, the two of you can obliterate everything in your way even on the hardest difficulty levels. Your other companions will just be along for the ride.

As stated in the journal, you need three ingredients to craft the Spirit Blade Hilt to continue the quest. You need the following resources:
- 3x Wisp Essences
- 10x Lazurite
- A book on Knight-Enchanter methods
If you have recruited Vivienne, you can find the book near her in her room in Skyhold. If you haven't recruited her, the book can be bought from the book merchant in Val Royeaux.
You'll need to collect the Wisp Essences yourself in The Fallow Mire. The screenshot below shows the map of the area, and the red circles indicate where you can find them. (Note the location of The Den landmark for reference.) There may be multiple Wisp Essences per marked area, so you may not have to visit them all. However, it may take multiple hunting trips to kill enough enemies to farm all three units.
The Lazurite can be found in The Western Approach, Exalted Plains, and Hissing Wastes. You can mine it yourself, but you can run the mission Hissing Wastes Resources with Cullen if you'd rather not collect those yourself.
After assembling the ingredients, you can assemble the Spirit Blade Hilt at any requisition table. Deliver it to Commander Helaine to resolve the quest. Her location is not marked on the map but she, like the other trainers, stands near the front gate of Skyhold.
Afterward, you can choose to commit to being a Knight-Enchanter. If you decline, you can come back and commit to it later as long as you haven't committed to either of the others.
